Catching a Northern on a Rattle Reel
Last winter my boyfriend and I spent the night in their fish house and he caught this northern on one of the rattle reels.

How to decide between a light and ultra-light ice fishing rod and reel combo?
We are just getting started, wanting to do some general ice fishing in north-west Michigan?

If you`re fishing mainly for pan fish, ultra light is definitely the way to go. If you`re going to be fishing for walleye or some other larger game fish, you might want to get the light combo. If you can get an extra spool for the light combo, put 2lb. test on it, and just change to the light line when you`re after pan fish.

how does an automatic fly reel work?
One of the biggest problems when fly fishing is when your line tangles around your feet. The auto reel has a spring, when you catch a fish you pull a lever and the excess line is pulled back in the reel. Bingo.

what size fishing rod for surf fishing in NJ?
i already have a 10 ft lamiglas with a penn 525 mag. i mostly only throw bait with it though. i am looking to get another one to have lure ready when a blitz comes by. i have a couple of questions though. what rod length should i get? should i get two more surf rods?

10ft is fine. If you try the 10.6` or the 11` it might effect your casting ability but the taller rods gives you more strength in fighting big bass or bluefish. If you`re tossing lures, a light 10` like a lamiglas or a St. Croix premiere are fine. Blitzes are mostly in the fall, in the spring and summer you`ll catch more bottom fishing with bunker chunks.

Alternative methods to catch red salmon
Last week I hinted that there are more ways to catch red salmon than sight fishing. You don?t have to join the crowds in the few locations where site fishing works. Red salmon can be caught in lots of other places, too.

Up until 25 years ago, you never heard of anyone catching reds on Kodiak with hook and line. Everyone was convinced that if you wanted to score you had to use a gillnet.

Yet catching reds on hooks is old hat in lots of other places! Kodiak?s favorite technique is the legal snag worked out on the Kenai Peninsula, but with a twist. While you can?t see the fish in Kenai rivers, the runs are strong enough that ?blind? fishing works.

Fast and Furious Rock Cod Fishing on Light Tackle
Another fun day of rockfishing on the big pond. I set the camera down and taped for an hour, landing 8 hard heads, and losing a few on the way up ...

Switching from cheap rod to graphite?
Does anyone remember when they switched from a non-graphite rod to a graphite one? I remember, i was feeling crappie bites on a MH action rod, when i could hardly feel them on a cheap bluegill sized combo. Graphite is awesome. Anybody remember the day?

Flounder fishing: 9 essential tips for catching Flounder
A successful flounder fishing trip must be prepared for in depth and with the goal of catching the fish in mind. The article is well written and focuses on the nine essentials that must be addressed prior to departure: rod and reel, tackle selection, cast net, bait bucket, clothing, cooler, safety kit, weather, tide and times.

A fisherman will most definitely have to prepare the night before and carry a load to the fishing site. The location is usually a good distance from the vehicle with rough terrain a definite. Often fishing sites that have previously been productive will be jammed packed with other flounder hunters with the same thing in mind, to catch flounder. With all these issues in mind, equipment and preparation become vastly important.

56lb Wahoo on spin w/butterfly jig
Wahoo fishing in San Salvador in March. This video is last minutes of a 15 minute heart attack I had with a big hoo on spin. 700` of water off .

What are the parts of the fly fishing rod?
I just got a fly rod the other day and it broke on our camping trip. I have to send in a form and I am not sure what the parts are the fly rod? Does anyone know the a website that has a picture of a Fly fishing rod and it shows the names of the parts of the fly rod?

Hair rigged pellets on the pole
Towards the end of last Autumn & the beginning of this Spring/Summer I have been experimenting with hair rigging a hard pellet dead depth on the pole.Hair rigging a hard pellet is nothing new when shallow fishing, either on the pole or the pellet waggler. But it is less common to hair rig a hard pellet on the deck with the pole. It is more common to see anglers either using soft pellets with a conventional spade end hook or a banded hard pellet straight onto the hook. Both of these however have their disadvantages.Soft pellets aren’t very durable & often get ravaged by silverfish or come off the hook on the strike.

What is a cheap baitcasting rod and reel combo?
I am just looking into baitcasting reels and this will be my first one can you give me one under $60. Tell me about them too just everything i will need to know about them.

I would go to a place like a Bass Pro Shop or Cabela`s if available in your area. My wife and I purchased baitcasting reels last year. We did what was said, but still ended up making birds nests with the line. I would consult an expert - good luck!

Extended Fishing Report for June 1
North Coast streams and rivers are regulated by low flow closures. If not mentioned, the river is closed or no reports. The DFG`s Low Flow Closure Hotline for north coast rivers is (707) 822-3164. For the Russian River and counties of Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin, call (707) 944-5533. South Central Coast streams number is (831) 649-2886. Many streams closed, and others change to artificial/barbless only on March 31 and others on April 25.

CHETCO RIVER "Fishing for cutthroat trout opened May 23, and it`s fair to good in the Chetco, throughout the river. Morning or late evening are the best times, and the best lures are beadhead zug bugs in a sculpin pattern, or tossing Mepps or Panther Martin spinners, or Dick Nite spoons. Bait is not allowed above tide-influenced waters.

Can you fish bass with a spinning rod? What is the average weight of a bass? Can you catch speckled trout with a small top water frog?
Also what do you think is the best all round fishing rod? What do you thik about a spinning rod, baitcasting rod, and a spincasting rod?

What is the best casting rod for steelhead and salmon?
I live in Washington and need to pick up a casting rod for steelhead this winter. I bought a nice Shimano Tekota reel, the 500LC. I`ll be using it out on my drift boat mainly.

Stick with All Star, Fenwick or G-Loomis like this 9`9" heavy action with a long handle for extra leverage and balance. Since you are fishing from a boat, you might even consider a 10`6" model good for 2-8 oz baits and 10-40 lb test.

How exactly do the long telescopic crappie poles work?
I seen one and it didnt have any eyes and it doesnt have a spot for a reel. Can you reccomend a good length?

just tie the line around the tip, hold it out,set the dobber, watch for the bite, lift fish in.look around they make those 11 footers with guides and a small reel seat for ultra light action.tons of fun for all pan fish.cane fishing is what you would be doing with the other rod .although a somewhat interesting method it is rarely used now adays.some of those stlye cane poles are also modeled to run the line through the pole itself thats why no guides show.that may be the style you are looking at.same principle.its called cane fishing

Does any one manufacture, a reel that doubles as a spinning or bait casting & a fly reel?
For on an eagle claw, pack-it, spin/fly rod.

Here is a good reel that works well for a travel rod made by Pflueger. Other companies have similar models as well. It is neither a spinning reel, baitcaster or fly reel, rather a closed-face spinning reel called an underspin reel.

How can I repair my rocket fishing rod?
My rocket fishing rod will not cast or reel in. The line keeps getting caught around the pin that holds the silver cover on the line.
