How to decide between a light
and ultra-light ice fishing
rod and reel combo?
We are just getting started,
wanting to do some general ice
fishing in north-west
Michigan?
If you`re fishing mainly for
pan fish, ultra light is
definitely the way to go. If
you`re going to be fishing for
walleye or some other larger
game fish, you might want to
get the light combo. If you
can get an extra spool for the
light combo, put 2lb. test on
it, and just change to the
light line when you`re after
pan fish.

how does an automatic fly reel
work?
One of the biggest problems
when fly fishing is when your
line tangles around your feet.
The auto reel has a spring,
when you catch a fish you pull
a lever and the excess line is
pulled back in the reel.
Bingo.

what size fishing rod for surf
fishing in NJ?
i already have a 10 ft
lamiglas with a penn 525 mag.
i mostly only throw bait with
it though. i am looking to get
another one to have lure ready
when a blitz comes by. i have
a couple of questions though.
what rod length should i get?
should i get two more surf
rods?
10ft is fine. If you try the
10.6` or the 11` it might
effect your casting ability
but the taller rods gives you
more strength in fighting big
bass or bluefish. If you`re
tossing lures, a light 10`
like a lamiglas or a St. Croix
premiere are fine. Blitzes are
mostly in the fall, in the
spring and summer you`ll catch
more bottom fishing with
bunker chunks.

Alternative methods to catch
red salmon
Last week I hinted that there
are more ways to catch red
salmon than sight fishing. You
don?t have to join the crowds
in the few locations where
site fishing works. Red salmon
can be caught in lots of other
places, too.
Up until 25 years ago, you
never heard of anyone catching
reds on Kodiak with hook and
line. Everyone was convinced
that if you wanted to score
you had to use a gillnet.
Yet catching reds on hooks is
old hat in lots of other
places! Kodiak?s favorite
technique is the legal snag
worked out on the Kenai
Peninsula, but with a twist.
While you can?t see the fish
in Kenai rivers, the runs are
strong enough that ?blind?
fishing works.

Flounder fishing: 9 essential
tips for catching Flounder
A successful flounder
fishing trip must be prepared
for in depth and with the goal
of catching the fish in mind.
The article is well written
and focuses on the nine
essentials that must be
addressed prior to departure:
rod and reel, tackle
selection, cast net, bait
bucket, clothing, cooler,
safety kit, weather, tide and
times.
A fisherman will most
definitely have to prepare the
night before and carry a load
to the fishing site. The
location is usually a good
distance from the vehicle with
rough terrain a definite.
Often fishing sites that have
previously been productive
will be jammed packed with
other flounder hunters with
the same thing in mind, to
catch flounder. With all these
issues in mind, equipment and
preparation become vastly
important.

Hair rigged pellets on the
pole
Towards the end of last Autumn
& the beginning of this
Spring/Summer I have been
experimenting with hair
rigging a hard pellet dead
depth on the pole.Hair rigging
a hard pellet is nothing new
when shallow fishing, either
on the pole or the pellet
waggler. But it is less common
to hair rig a hard pellet on
the deck with the pole. It is
more common to see anglers
either using soft pellets with
a conventional spade end hook
or a banded hard pellet
straight onto the hook. Both
of these however have their
disadvantages.Soft pellets
aren’t very durable &
often get ravaged by
silverfish or come off the
hook on the strike.

Stick with All Star, Fenwick

heavy action with a long
handle for extra leverage and
balance. Since you are fishing
from a boat, you might even
consider a 10`6" model good
for 2-8 oz baits and 10-40 lb
