Why Check Domain Age, SSL and Blacklists

Why Check Domain Age, SSL and Blacklists

Before trusting a website with money or data, it helps to look at it "technically". Three checks take seconds and filter out most dubious resources. They are all collected on every company page in our catalog — in the "Security Checks" block.

Reviews tell you how a site treats people. Technical checks show what it actually is. Together they give the full picture.

Domain age

The domain registration date shows how long a site has really existed. It is one of the most honest trust signals:

  • a domain 5–10 years old — the project has been around and has something to lose;
  • a domain a few weeks old — no reason to trust it yet;
  • a fresh domain for a "well-known brand" — almost certainly a fake.

SSL certificate

SSL encrypts the connection — the padlock icon in the address bar. Without a valid certificate, data including passwords and card numbers travels in plain text. Today almost every serious site uses HTTPS, so its absence on a payment page is an anomaly, not a detail.

Blacklists

There are public databases of domains flagged for spam and fraud. If a domain is on such a list, it is nearly a verdict. We check sites against blacklists automatically and show the result: "not listed" is good, "listed" is a serious reason to avoid the resource.

DNS, IP and registrar

It is also useful to see which servers a site runs on and who its registrar is. A sudden change of hosting or registrar for a long-running project may indicate a change of ownership.

How it works here: when you open a company page, the platform gathers all this data and shows it in one block. No need to hunt for WHOIS tools — just open the site card.

Technical check checklist

  1. Look at the domain age — the older, the better.
  2. Make sure the SSL certificate is valid.
  3. Check that the domain is not on blacklists.
  4. Match the technical data against reviews from real people.

In short

Domain age, SSL and blacklists are three quick checks that cut out most dangerous sites. They matter most where money is at stake — in online stores and crypto services. The full list of scam signs is in "How to Spot a Scam Website".
